ChildFund Japan Philippine Branch is pleased to announce the successful completion of a project aimed at improving access to healthcare in a mountainous area of Davao del Sur, Southern Philippines. Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan through its “Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO Projects,” the initiative culminated in the inauguration of a new Maternal and Child Birthing Home on March 10, 2026. The ceremony brought together local government representatives, community members to mark the opening of this important facility, which will serve eight surrounding villages.
Bridging the Gap to Essential Care
The project focused on a remote mountainous area located about three hours from the outskirts of Davao City, where access involves navigating rough, unpaved roads and river crossings without bridges. While rich in natural beauty and strong community ties, the area has long faced limited access to essential healthcare services due to the absence of nearby hospitals or clinics
In times of illness or injury, residents often travel long distances on foot or by motorcycle along challenging terrain. This has been particularly difficult for expectant mothers and newborns, underscoring the urgent need for accessible and timely medical care to prevent avoidable risks during emergencies.

Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure and Emergency Response
To respond to these challenges, the project supported the construction of a fully equipped Maternal and Child Birthing Home, including examination and treatment rooms, as well as a dedicated delivery room to support safe childbirth. In addition, a dedicated emergency vehicle was provided to help ensure that mothers in labor and other patients can be safely referred and transported to nearby hospitals when higher-level care is needed.
Community-Based Health Education and Safeguarding Awareness
Beyond infrastructure, the project placed strong emphasis on capacity building in partnership with the Davao Medical School Foundation.
- Training for Local Officials and Community Leaders: Focused on the sustainable management and operation of the facility.
- Training for Mothers and Youth: Provided practical knowledge on nutrition, hygiene, maternal and child health, and the use of medicinal plants. The activity also included safeguarding awareness, the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, and the management of personal data safety.
One participant shared, “I was hesitant to join at first, but the topic was so valuable that I ended up attending every single session. I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned with my family and friends!” The feedback highlights a significant increase in health awareness within the community.

Looking Ahead
Implementing the project in a remote area presented logistical challenges, but it was made possible through the active participation and cooperation of the local community, the commitment of partner institutions, and the generous support of the Japanese people. Moving forward, the facility will be staffed by qualified medical personnel who will provide prenatal and postnatal care, alongside continued health education for families and youth. These efforts will help ensure that the services remain responsive to local needs.
ChildFund Japan Philippine Branch will continue its partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in the 2026 fiscal year, with a focus on improving educational environments for children in the Philippines. We remain committed to working hand-in-hand with communities to create safe, supportive environments that protect the well-being and future of children.
