BRIDGING THE GAP

Healthcare services in remote areas can be difficult to access, particularly for Indigenous Peoples (IPs) living in mountainous areas. To address this issue, ChildFund Japan is collaborating with the Davao Medical School Foundation, Inc.-Institute of Primary Health Care (DMSFI-IPHC) to improve healthcare accessibility in Barangay Marilog, Davao del Sur, with support from the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Japanese NGO.

The project, named “Bridging the Gap: Improved Healthcare Access through a New Barangay Health Station in the Mountainous Area of Davao del Sur,” was officially launched on March 19, 2025, following the signing of the grant contract. The agreement was signed by His Excellency Kazuya Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines, and Hiroyuki Takita, Country Director of ChildFund Japan.

Addressing Healthcare Need in Barangay Marilog

Barangay Marilog comprises eight sitios, where the Matigsalog tribe makes up the majority of the population. Many of them struggle to get healthcare due to their remote location and limited medical facilities.

This project will build a new Barangay Health Stationwith medical equipment and supplies to serve the Barangay Marilog’s eighth sitios. In addition, an emergency transport vehicle equipped with basic medical equipment will be given to ensure prompt referrals to higher-level healthcare facilities. The project also intends to secure Department of Health certification, which would allow for easier access to the national health insurance system and ensure long-term viability.

Community Collaboration

The strong support of the local community is an important part of this endeavor. The Matigsalog tribe’s leaders have consented to offer land for the health station at no cost. Their engagement reflects the community’s common objective of enhancing health care and promoting long-term well-being.

Advancing Community Health

This project contributes to the Philippine government’s overall efforts to improve primary healthcare and community health security by improving healthcare access, health education, and referral systems. This initiative sets the groundwork for a healthier future for Indigenous communities in Davao del Sur.
