A major milestone for education and learner advocacy was achieved on June 30, 2026, as ChildFund Japan, alongside the Notre Dame Business Resource Center Foundation, Inc. (NDBRCFI), officially broke ground on a classroom construction and peace education project in General Santos.
Titled “Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Education through an Improved Learning Environment,” this initiative is funded by the government of Japan. The project is strategically designed to build resilient school infrastructure while simultaneously launching peace advocacy programs for young Blaan, Christian, and Muslim learners.
The morning event was packed with symbolic and cultural milestones. Attendees witnessed a traditional site blessing to consecrate the future building grounds, the burial of a project time capsule to commemorate the start of construction, and the official launch of the Peace Education Program, all framed by vibrant cultural presentations delivered by local performers.

A central highlight of the event was the signing of a shared pledge of commitment, uniting local and international leaders under a common goal.
In his message of support, Hon. Junya Inoue, Deputy Consul-General of the Japanese Consulate in Davao, expressed his deep appreciation for the community’s resilience. He underscored the importance of solidarity, particularly in the wake of the recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake offshore in Southern Mindanao. Deputy Consul-General Inoue emphasized that education is the ultimate foundation of society, noting that classrooms must be spaces where children learn the respect, understanding, and core values that shape a better future.

During the ceremony, student leaders took the stage to express what the new infrastructure means to the student body. Benser John, speaking on behalf of his peers, expressed deep gratitude for the project and emphasized the profound impact it will have on their journey.
“As students and young leaders, we wholeheartedly accept this opportunity with gratitude and responsibility. We promise to value this gift and make the most of the opportunities that this new facility will bring. To us, this is more than just a building — it is a symbol of trust, hope, partnership, and a brighter future ahead. Thank you for believing in us, investing in our future, and giving us another reason to dream bigger and aim higher.”
Looking forward, learners, student leaders, and teachers are eagerly anticipating a renewed culture of dialogue and social cohesion. By equipping the youth with the tools of peace alongside an upgraded academic environment, stakeholders recognized that laying the physical foundations for these new learning spaces goes hand in hand with cultivating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. “This activity aims to strengthen stakeholder collaboration and ownership,” said Melanie, the host school’s Principal. “By gathering local government, education officials, and development partners, we are reinforcing our collective vision for a peaceful and inclusive learning environment.”
