FAITH, HOPE, AND FORGIVENESS: A SUCCESS STORY OF A FORMER SPONSORED CHILD

This story is shared with informed consent and has been edited in accordance with ChildFund Japan Philippine Branch’s Safeguarding and Ethical Storytelling Guidelines to protect privacy and uphold dignity.

From a Sponsored Child to a Teacher and Mentor

When John Louie was in Grade 5, he became a sponsored child, an opportunity that would quietly shape the course of his life. Growing up in a large family, he faced challenges that could have limited his opportunities. Yet, even in difficult circumstances, his parents encouraged their children to stay in school and hope for a better future.

Through the sponsorship program, ChildFund Japan (CFJ), through its project partner, supported not only John Louie’s education but also his personal and spiritual growth. He joined activities that helped him build confidence, discover his love for volleyball, and strengthen his faith, foundations that would guide him throughout his journey.

Dreams That Evolve

As a child, John Louie dreamed of becoming a priest. With encouragement from a former staff member of CFJ’s project partner, he considered enrolling in a residential school. As he grew older, his dreams evolved, leading him to find other ways to serve others, ways that would connect him with his community and future students.

When the opportunity for tertiary education came, John Louie chose a profession rooted in service. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, majoring in English and Literature. Teaching became not just a career, but a calling to guide young minds and help children discover their potential.

Perseverance in Difficult Times

During his first year at university, John Louie experienced a significant personal loss that deeply affected his family situation. In this challenging period, CFJ provided guidance and encouragement, reminding him that completing his education would open doors not only for him but also for his family.

Despite financial hardships, he persevered. To support himself and his sister, he offered academic assistance to classmates and students from other colleges, turning his knowledge into a lifeline that allowed him to continue studying while helping others succeed.

A Journey of Growth and Giving Back

John Louie graduated in March 2007 and earned his teaching license the same year. He worked in a private Catholic school for four years before transferring to the public school system. Today, he teaches English and Science in a public elementary school and was promoted to Teacher III several years ago. He also hopes to complete his master’s thesis soon, continuing his lifelong journey of learning.

In recent years, he has been able to give back to his family by supporting his nieces’ education. One niece is now working abroad, while another is pursuing a degree in civil engineering. He was also blessed with his own home, a milestone he sees as a testament to perseverance, faith, and the support that guided him along the way.

Despite the challenges his family faced, John Louie continues to extend support and forgiveness, reflecting his deep commitment to compassion, family, and service.
